Santanyí an agricultural village located in the south east of the island, with a staggering 35 km of coastline, 172 archaeological sites dating from the islands’ Bronze Age Talaiotic settlements and the protected Mondragó Natural Park, making this an area of outstanding natural beauty and historic interest.

It is also an area rich in vineyards with a longstanding history of winemaking and flat terrain, great for cycling.

SANTANYÍ ATTRACTIONS
Santanyí Market

The market takes place every Wednesday and Saturday morning from dawn until around 2 pm with colourful displays of fruit and vegetables, cheese, cold meats, freshly baked bread and pastries, olives, oil and wine. You can buy local produce but also artisanal products made in Santanyí like cheese, salt from Es Trenc, and eco wines, as well as island-made basket ware, fabrics, glass and porcelain, jewellery, pearls and leather. It is a great morning out but is best enjoyed early as it can get quite busy, especially on Saturdays in the peak summer months of July and August.

Mondragó Natural Park

This is the Balearic Island’s second-largest protected natural area, with 765 hectares of land and a wealth of autochthonous flora and fauna and a popular birding spot for migratory birds.

Cap de Ses Salines

The Cape, on the southernmost point of Mallorca, is crowned by charming little lighthouse from where you can see the Island of Cabrera.

Diving School

There is an English speaking diving school in Porto Petro, just down the road from Santanyí, which offers day dives around the underwater caves in this magical part of Mallorca’s coast. It’s an exciting way to spend the day, especially if you have a gaggle of bored teenagers on your hands or just want to try something completely new.

SANTANYÍ Eating Out
Like most of the ancient villages in Mallorca, life in Santanyí revolves around the central square, where you will find restaurants and cafes, spilling out onto pavements, serving a selection of typical island snacks, tapas and more elaborate Mediterranean dishes. A few have shaded interior courtyards that are blissful on hot summer days and in the outskirts of town, and in nearby Ses Salines, there are a few more upmarket restaurants.

BEACHES near Alaró
Cala Esmeralda – Small and beautiful cove with sand, cocks and vegetation in the Cala d’Or housing development, in Santanyí. Dimensions: 40 m x 25 m.

Cala d’Or – Sandy beach with built up area, restaurants and plenty of greenery. Impossible to park in summer. Dimensions: 80 m x 40 m.

Portopetro – Secluded beach near Portopetro’s small fishing harbour

Caló d’es Moro – Small cove with difficult access, stone steps in fairly bad condition, beautiful views and crystal clear water. Dimensions: 50 m x15 m.

Cala Mondragó – Situated within Mondragó Natural Reserve, this is a soft sandy beach with rocky inlets and turquoise blue sea

Cala Santanyí – Fine sandy cove with rocky cliffs, easy to reach and busy in summer. Dimensions: 100 m x 70 m.

Cala Llombards – Long, thin stretch of fine white sand and turquoise water, fairly unknown and empty even in peak summer.

Cala de s’Almunia – Adjacent to Caló d’es Moro, this beach is also secluded and with the clearest turquoise sea. Though it has no facilities, it is popular in summer, and difficult to park.

CYCLING in SANTANYÍ
The countryside in the SE is fairly flat with occasional rolling hills. This is the flattest part of the island! So cycling here is perfect for clocking in the miles, training distances and for leisurely cycle rides around the vineyards and saltpans.

PARKING in Santanyí
Like most of Majorca in summer, it is best to avoid driving on the hot busy island roads, not because they are particularly dangerous (they aren’t) but because they get crowded and busy… and to avoid the hellish torment of finding parking space once you reach your destination.
